Weipa

Stunning beaches, thrilling wilderness, fascinating history and fantastic fishing… yep, you’re in Weipa!

Weipa is both the gateway to western Cape Yorke and the largest Bauxite deposit in the world. In fact, Weipa as it currently stands was predominately constructed by aluminium company Comalco. Home to nearly 4,000 people, the vast majority work in the mines, but other popular industries include hospitals, education and grocery retail.

Weipa’s current major development is the Amrun Project, which will extend mining activities between Weipa and Aurukun including the construction of a processing plant, damn, and a ferry terminal to transport workers from Weipa to the mine. Weipa will also soon be home to an incredible new solar farm, which is the very first application of renewable energy to power mining operations in a regional location.

Thanks to it’s coastal location and amazing marine life, Weipa is also a highlight for fishing fanatics. It’s always worth taking some time out to unwind and drop a line in any one of Weipa’s ideal fishing spots. Otherwise it’s a great town for a picnic, birdwatching or just taking a stroll through local nature.

On paper it might seem nearly impossible, but Weipa is an incredible combination of powerful industry and revitalizing nature. If you’re travelling through Cape Yorke, make sure you don’t miss it.
